Youngins always find it hard to understand why Barbra Streisand is considered a diva of excellence, I should even say a diva "par excellence". Of course she is a pioneer in everything that she did. Of course she is larger than life and multi-talented. Singer, actress, producer, filmmaker, writer, composer... she did it all and in all those areas she gained the highest recognition for the excellence of her art and work. Academy Award (Oscar - one as an actress, another one as a composer since she composed the music of "Evergreen"), Grammy Awards, Emmys, Tonys, AFI legend Award, she has them all. But let's put all those "details" aside and let's just focus on the quality of her voice.
What the younger generation does not understand is that not only Streisand's voice is a smart mixture between softness, soul, power and intensity but she sings with a very difficult and complex vocal technique (holding her breath in order to make it light or strong, using her diaphragm to sing pushing air up and out of her lungs as the tone is produced) and it is so well mastered that it seems and sounds so simple and flawless.
As a singer, I'd say she's one of the three most important female "pop" vocalist of all time (although she's not that pop), the two other ones beeing Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey (the old one).

Whitney Houston probably is as good as Barbra Streisand (although her voice is totally different from Barbra) cuz she's the first female singer to really exploit to the maximum the power of her voice. She is the first female singer to get recognition for the power and the strength of her vocal chords (Streisand had a very powerful voice too but she didn't really used that that much) and when La Houston blows a "One Moment In Time", man, it's something!! Mariah Carey is also an amazing singer because her vocal technique is so different and distinctive than that of Babs or Whitneys. Mariah Carey sings in a very complicated way. Contrary to Whitney Houston or Barbra Streisand, Mariah's voice goes in all kinds of directions at the same time. She's the first female singer to really use the higher (whitle) register (although Minnie Ripperton did it before her) but Carey does it in a way people never heard before. Her singing style is very complex and has influenced so many young singers out there.

Moi j'ai ma préférence pour Mariah. Elle a une diversité vocale étonnante et possède beaucoup de puissance vocale. Whitney n'a que la puissance. sa voix est monocorde...

la performance de "one momen in time" est trop puissante, elle fout grave les frissons cette femme quand elle chante live comme ca! tu aurais du poster cette video Alex! mariah a une tres belle voix c'est claire mais mois je prefere la puissance de Houston! j'adore sa classe et sa beauté dans how will I know, cette chanson est vieille mais je l'adore toujours!

Je suis un peu d'accord avec toi. Mariah doit arreter avec ses minauderies. Qu'elle nous revienne, l,ancienne mariah. Quelle accorde plus d'importance a sa voix et a sa musique.

Qu'elle nous produise de belles ballades comme my all, butterfly, whenever you call et surtout le tres splendide close yours eyes. Elle me manque tellement. Sa musique m'a tellement marquee.

J'ai hate que l'ex mariah revienne.
